In order for organizations to perform well in a global competitive world, it is important to identify the competitive advantages that they can benefit from. Models to assess status and identify improvement opportunities, and in particular maturity models, that can help organizations assessing their current competencies in a structured way to implement changes and improvements, has become essential.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A maturity model can be described as a structured collection of elements that describe certain aspects of maturity in an organization. A maturity model may provide, for example:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*a place to start;&lt;br /&gt;
*the benefit of a community’s prior experiences;&lt;br /&gt;
*a common language and a shared vision;&lt;br /&gt;
*a framework for prioritizing actions; and&lt;br /&gt;
*a way to define what improvement means for your organization.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A maturity model can also be used as a benchmark for comparison and as an aid to understanding.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are a lot of different maturity approaches on the market, the most known is CMM and CMMI, however the narrow focus makes these maturity models and approaches limited to real essential architecture and business improvement (e.g. cross business effectiveness and efficiency). In 2009, four universities therefore joined their combined forces to further innovate and develop the maturity models. These four Universities were a part of the Global University Alliance which consists of more than 900 universities. Out of all these universities, four Universities (both IT Universities and Business Schools) dedicated their time and resources in three different countries with vested research interest in business process management, strategy modelling, economics, business modelling, value management, performance management, service aspects, information and technology modelling. They brought together a rich blend of both academic and industry experience to contribute to a maturing field in Business and IT. The research and development team was lead by Mark von Rosing (Copenhagen Business School and IT University, Denmark), Siavash Moshiri (Sheffield Business School, United Kingdom) and Karin Gräslund (Wiesbaden Business School, Germany).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The maturity model development had the following focus:&lt;br /&gt;
*Practical as well as academic research.&lt;br /&gt;
*Best practice from different Industry leaders - to be a foundation of best practice standardization.&lt;br /&gt;
*Competency development maturity models where a company can focus not only on capabilities but on competencies (capabilities and resources).&lt;br /&gt;
*Integration of different maturity model.&lt;br /&gt;
*Cross-disciplinary integration of Enterprise Modelling concepts e.g. business model, all value aspects, services, process, information, applications, data, platforms, infrastructure, cloud as well as for transformation and innovation modelling.&lt;br /&gt;
*Modelling from As-Is and To-Be development and the identification of Core Competitive and Core Differentiated areas as well as value areas/drivers.&lt;br /&gt;
*Effective use of its maturities as they are rated with their Revenue and Cost: High, Medium or Low. To ensure the cost to achieve a higher maturity level would not exceed the possible gain. This may effectively “blind” an organization to the most effective use of its capabilities and resources.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
During 2010, more people from the industry joined, among these were development members who work for SAP, IBM, Danish Defense, Government of Canada, Artos Origin, and The Open Group (who develops TOGAF) gave input, feedback and QA to build the cross integrated maturity models, some of these with more business focus while others with more application or technology focus.&lt;br /&gt;
